Creating Mplus-compatible data files and syntax using N2Mplus
After opening N2Mplus, creating an Mplus-compatible dataset and syntax is a simple three-step process:
-
Open an Excel or SPSS file.
-
Select which variables you would like to use in your Mplus analysis.
-
Specify how missing values are coded in your Excel or SPSS file (optional).
Details regarding how to accomplish each of these three steps are provided below. After completing these tasks, simply click on the 'Go!' button to create your Mplus-compatible dataset and syntax.
Opening Excel files in N2Mplus
To open an Excel file in N2Mplus, follow these steps:
-
After opening N2Mplus, click on the 'Browse' button. This will open the 'Select Source Data File' dialog box.
-
By default, 'Excel' should be selected in the 'Files of type' dropdown list. If 'Excel' is not selected, select it now.
-
Navigate to the location where your Excel file is located, and select your file by clicking on it. The name of your Excel file should now appear in the 'File name' text box. Note that your Mplus-compatible dataset will be created in the same folder as your Excel file.
-
Click on the 'Open' button. This will open the 'Select Excel Worksheet' dialog box.
-
From within the 'Select Excel Worksheet' dialog box, select the worksheet in your Excel file from which you would like to import data.
-
From within the 'Select Excel Worksheet' dialog box, specify whether the first row of data in your Excel worksheet contains variable names. By default, N2Mplus will read variable names from the first row of data. If you deselect this option, N2Mplus will begin reading data at the first row of the selected worksheet, and variables will be named 'var1', 'var2', 'var3', etc.
-
Click on the 'OK' button. N2Mplus will load your Excel file, and the available variables will appear in the 'Select Variables to Use' list box.
Opening SPSS files in N2Mplus
To open an SPSS file in N2Mplus, follow these steps:
-
After opening N2Mplus, click on the 'Browse' button. This will open the 'Select Source Data File' dialog box.
-
Select 'SPSS' in the 'Files of type' dropdown list.
-
Navigate to the location where your SPSS file is located, and select your file by clicking on it. The name of your SPSS file should now appear in the 'File name' text box. Note that your Mplus-compatible dataset will be created in the same folder as your SPSS file.
-
Click on the 'Open' button. N2Mplus will load your SPSS file, and the available variables will appear in the 'Select Variables to Use' list box.
Selecting variables in N2Mplus
After opening your source data file, you will need to specify which variables you would like to use in your Mplus analysis. Here's how:
-
By default, the 'Use all variables' radio button will be selected. If you would like to use all of the variables in your dataset, then you can proceed to identifying missing values.
-
If you only need to use a subset of the variables contained within your dataset, then click on the 'Use selected variables' radio button. This will enable the 'Select Variables to Use' list box.
-
Select which variables you would like to use by double-clicking on the appropriate variable names in the list box. When a variable is selected, a check mark will appear next to the variable name. Note that the variable names which appear in the list are formatted for compatibility with Mplus.
Identifying missing values in N2Mplus
Identifying missing values in N2Mplus is optional, and is only necessary if your dataset contains missing values. If your dataset contains missing values, follow these steps:
-
Click on the 'Dataset contains missing values' check box. This will enable the 'Missing values are coded as' text box.
-
In the 'Missing values are coded as' text box, specify the code that is used in your dataset to identify missing values. By default, this value is '-99'. Note that while any code that is seven characters or less in length is acceptable, numeric codes are preferred. Also note that if you are using a period / dot (.) to indicate missing values, you may encounter an error in versions of Mplus prior to 4.21.
Copying N2Mplus-generated syntax into Mplus
After clicking on the 'Go!' button on the main N2Mplus user interface window, your data file will be processed, and the 'N2Mplus Output' window will appear. To copy the syntax into Mplus, follow these steps:
-
Click on the 'Copy syntax to clipboard' button. This will copy the syntax contained in the 'Mplus Syntax' text box to the Windows clipboard.
-
Open Mplus, and create a new input file.
-
Paste your syntax into the Mplus input file by selecting 'Paste' from the 'Edit' menu.
Previewing your Mplus-compatible dataset
After clicking on the 'Go!' button on the main N2Mplus user interface window, your data file will be processed, and the 'N2Mplus Output' window will appear. To preview your new Mplus-compatible data file, follow these steps:
-
Click on the 'View Mplus-compatible data file' button. This will open your new Mplus-compatible data file in the Windows Notepad.
-
Preview your new data file by using the Windows Notepad. Note that your Mplus-compatible data file has been created in the same folder as your source data file.
